T-Fal Elegance Stainless-Steel 10-Piece Cookware Set Review

I hesitated before I purchased this set because some of the reviews were not favorable. Some of the reviews were a total 5, so I wondered how there could be such a huge gap between the purchaser's reviews. A little homework answered the question.

This is a beautiful set, and if handled ACCORDING TO THE DIRECTIONS, should stay in beautiful shape. One of the reviewers stated that her cookware turned blue after being put into the dishwasher. The directions distinctly state that this is a normal condition for stainless steel and can be remedied by wiping lemon juice or vinegar over the pot/pan. It works; just as stated.

Another reviewer stated that her pan warped. This happens when the heat is too high. Instructions fully state that one should not use this cookware on HIGH. It does not take much heat to allow the food to cook. There is an aluminum disk inserted in the bottom to conduct the heat. Aluminum DOES warp and melt under extremely high conditions.

One reviewer stated that the steel could be bent with her fingers. Perhaps she had a defective piece, as there is NO WAY I could do such a thing. I hand quilt everyday and am a professional seamstress. I have a lot of strength in my fingers; but still, it is an impossibility to bend this steel. Granted, the cookware is not a professional HEAVY weight, but it is a cookware that is bit weighty, but easy to handle, and light enough to produce quick heat.

Last night I fried salmon patties, and the pan cleaned up nicely. I used a little BonAmi, which is similar to Bartender's Secret, which is recommended by the manufacturer. I have cooked chili, boiled pasta, steamed veggies...all to success and my cookware looks new.

Although I cook everyday, I did not want to continue with my non-stick cookware. I thought it would be a good idea to purchase a reasonably priced stainless set to get used to cooking with stainless; eventually moving up to a more pricey set if necessary. At this point, I do not think I will need to move up to a more pricey set, but will purchase additional pieces of the T-fal Elegance, including the chicken fryer and the 3 qt. pot/lid. I did already purchase the 12.5 saute pan and it is very useful.

I love this set and think the price does not speak for it's excellence. It is a LOT of value for the money.

Do not break your glass lid. - Elizabeth -
T-fal does not offer replacement lids for this cookware, which is an issue since glass lids are fairly easy to break. The pots have been fine.



Unfortunate waste of time and money - Eric - Arkansas
After reviewing the instructions for use and care, I found that using this cookware was very frustrating. Although this would be a great deal (10-piece set for under a hundred bucks), I found that after one use with medium heat as instructed both pans and one pot became a bit discolored and a good portion of the food would stick and was very difficult to clean. I tried again with even a lower heat only to find that I spent double the time to cook the food and again with much of the food stuck to the pan. I spent about 45 minutes of combined time cooking and cleaning the last time I used the 10.25" saute' pan. That was very frustrating and all will be packed and returned. The look and balance weight of each item is nice, but I feel that short cuts with alloy metals in manufacturing for a larger profit margin leaves the consumer with set of garbage.

Induction purrrrfect! I boiled some food in one, and instead of the food boiling over on to the stove, the bubbles came through the top holes in the cover. The liquid then stayed on the cover and did not run on to the stove.

Does the job but not the most sturdy pan in my cabinet - BLH - North Carolina
This pan reminds me of the somewhat flimsy items you can find in supermarkets -- bright and shiny but not built last. The handle has no heft, and the egg cups and frame seem unlikely to last for long. I suppose that's the best you can get for these days. However, after trying the cute little silicone egg poachers also available at Amazon, I was much happier with the egg-cooking experience using this pan. The eggs cooked evenly and there was no difficulty with water boiling up over the sides of the cups, as is the case with the silcone versions.

Update -- one week later: I pulled one of the egg cups out of the dishwasher and watched the little handle/knob bounce away. The screw holding it had come loose during the wash cycle. Being smaller than the screen at the bottom of my machine, the screw must have disappeared down the drain. So, now I have to make the time to visit the hardware store to see if I can find a replacement. What a nuisance! I'm dropping my rating from 3 down to 2 stars for this.

I'm surprised Calphalon has apparently discontinued this item. I purchased this real quality stainless steel set (the type that doesn't rust) on a gold box deal and was very pleased w/ how hefty it is. The corkscrew (easily worth ) can even open those plastic corks w/ ease (now I use my wonderful Pinzon)and I doubt it will ever wear out. The ice bucket (easily worth -40) can accommodate a champagne bottle and you never have to worry about breaking it, which I have done w/ a glass bucket. The tray is rather small (based on brand worth ), but can accommodate 4 regular sized wine glasses easily or you can use it as a baking pan for serving hot hors d'oeuvres.
